Chapter One — The Mirror

I never realized how quiet a room could be until all I could hear was my own heartbeat, and the friction sound of the silk over my skin.
A soft, steady rhythm beneath layers of silk and nerves.

The mirror glowed before me, a perfect rectangle of reflected light. But the woman inside it — the one with the trembling lips and gleaming eyes — she felt like someone I had only recently met.

It was my wedding day.
The day I had dreamed of for as long as I could remember.

And yet… I wasn’t sure what memory meant anymore.

I smiled at my reflection, but the smile hesitated, as though the muscles beneath my skin were still deciding how to move. The sensation was strange — delayed, mechanical, but also electric. Maybe it was excitement. Maybe fear. Or maybe it was something deeper, something that shimmered just beneath the surface of being human.

My fingers traced the edge of the vanity, where tiny motes of dust danced in the sunlight. The world felt too vivid — too sharp — as if every particle of light carried meaning.

“Madisson?”

A soft knock at the door.

My best friend — Lila — peeked her head in, her red curls bouncing as she grinned.
“Babe, are you seriously daydreaming right now? We’re on the clock.”

I turned toward her, laughing nervously. “I know, I just… needed a moment.”

She winked. “You’ve got one. Then it’s showtime.”

As the door closed, I looked back at my reflection.
The butterflies in my stomach felt like sparks — fluttering, fizzing, electric.
Was this what joy felt like?

Or was it simply a system overload?
